Introduction

Wait a minute... was this photoshopped?

A Portrait of the Author as an Argyle Silhouette

I suppose ‘Introduction’ is a bit of a misleading title for this post, since the whole reason I started this blog was to give myself an anonymous safe-haven wherein I can write without worrying about what the reader might think of me as a person. Therefore it is, in fact, in my best interest not to introduce myself any more here than I need to in order to get the ball rolling. I will say, then, that my pen name on this site—R. Guile—is a reference to one of the most unsung characters from my favorite movie: Die Hard. Anything else you want to learn about me, you’ll have to pull from my writings. And it is my firm belief that much of an author’s soul is exposed in his or her writing. So I look forward to your getting to know me better!

That said, I would like to give a bit more of an explanation for why this blog exists. I enjoy writing, but I really don’t do a lot of it in my daily life. I read books about writing and I write technical reports, but I don’t really have an outlet for my more creative side. This blog is to be that outlet. The types of things I envision posting here include short stories, essays, and (perhaps) a longer story or two released as periodicals. I am not a professional writer and I have given no thought to how I will publicize this blog, so good on you if you found this, and my sincere thanks if you’ve found it worth your time to read a posting or two.

Incidentally, I may just mention that the title of this blog comes from a line in the book “Hard Times” by Charles Dickens. I remember reading the phrase (which he used to describe the machinery in the factories during the Industrial Revolution) in high school and having a very vivid picture of a group of elephants sitting on the floor, wide-eyed, hugging themselves and rocking back and forth, whimpering as if they’d just witnessed a horrible murder. The day I’m able to fit half as much poetry into a three-word phrase of my own is the day I can truly call myself a writer.

So welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy your stay; bring your friends next time you visit!
